In a move to provide upbeat digital content on its growing online channels, Yahoo announced a new reality show competition for EDM (electronic dance music) fans.

Ultimate DJ, a live electronic-music battle is currently in the works, bringing together big names in the industry including Simon Cowell, as the show’s executive producer, and Steve Aoki, as a star judge.

In addition to Cowell, Patrick Moxey (Ultra Records), Ian Stewart, and Kelly Belldegrun (Syco Entertainment) will also be producing the competition. Taking on the executive director role is Hamish Hamilton. His previous credits involved the Super Bowl Half Time Show and The Academy Awards.

“Electronic music is one of the most important genres around the world and we want to respect what’s happening around the world,” said Cowell during an event at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center. “The show is intended to showcase the incredible talent that electronic music has shown the world. It will be made with respect.”

The highly anticipated show will take cues from other mainstream hits such as American Idol and X Factor. Instead of singers, DJs will go head to head for a shot at dual contracts from Ultra Records and Sony Music. The winner will also be featured as a headliner in a massive festival.

For the contestants, winning the Ultimate DJ title could help kick start one’s music career. Participating in the show alone can provide exposure to the industry’s finest, as the competition is set to attract record labels and other artists.

The show will be broadcasted on Yahoo Live, the tech company’s live streaming service. Yahoo chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt confirmed that viewers will be able to vote for their favorite DJs in real-time on the channel’s own social media platform, Tumblr.

“Ultimate DJ will be very much like the World Cup of EDM – country against country, DJ against DJ, fanbase against fanbase. And with all the voting happening on Tumblr, it’s yet another example of the growing convergence and synergies we are finding between the two platforms,” mentioned Savitt.

The Ultimate DJ marks Yahoo’s second venture into live music streaming. In April 2014, it struck a deal with Live Nation to provide a variety of daily concerts. The official Live Nation channel will start broadcasting live music festivals to welcome its second year with the company. Electronic Daisy Carnival (EDC) Las Vegas will be one of the first events featured on the channel.

“We plan on making money on this channel, as does Yahoo; we know advertisers are going to be oversubscribed,” highlighted Michael Rapino, Chief Executive of Live Nation.

Yahoo’s new 14-show lineup is diverse and edgy. With hopes to compete with Google’s YouTube, the company plans to roll out a daily news show called Yahoo News Live, featuring Katie Couric as the leading anchor.

Individuals can also expect a new sitcom that The Hollywood Reporter described as “Friends for the 21st century in the era of social media,” a car show hosted by Michelle Rodriguez and a lifestyle series starring Naomi Campbell.
