Do you want to travel with your drone and capture some of the best places in the world? If so, this list is a great place to start, as it includes 10 of the best locations, representing four continents. From beaches to city scenes and everything in between, this list has a location perfect for everyone.

Legality of Flying Drones

Before talking about the places, a quick note on legality. Wherever you are flying, you must make sure that it is legal to do so. In all of the places on this list, drone usage is legal in most parts. However, there are usually some no-fly areas, especially in big cities.

A few general rules you should follow are no flying over or close to national parks, military bases, hospitals, or airports. Also, there are some great online tools for checking if where you want to fly is legal.

Probably the most popular is AirMap, a smartphone app. With it, you can view airspace anywhere in the world and you can find the exact laws. It is extremely precise and it is a must have for drone pilots. So remember, with the big cities on this list, it’s your responsibility to verify that where you are flying is legal.

Now that we got that out of the way, here is the list.

Shark Bay, Western Australia

They don’t call it Shark Bay for nothing, as it is the place you should go if you want to capture sharks with your drone. March and July are considered shark season, and you’d be able to film many different species, including the Great Whites.

The extremely pristine and clear water makes this easy, and even if you can’t find any sharks, there are beautiful beaches and plenty other great ocean shots.

Haiku Stairs, Hawaii

Also known as Stairway to Heaven, the Haiku Stairs is a steep hiking trail on the island Oahu with nearly 4,000 steps built up on a local mountain back in 1942. However, the hiking trail has been closed to hiking since 1987, making it a hard to reach place; a perfect job for a drone.

Before going out, be especially diligent in knowing the legal fly zones, as some parts are in restricted airspace due to a nearby Marine Corps base. However, most spots are fine and you can see from the included video that scenery is spectacular. It gives incredible perspective; showing just how steep and long the steps go on for, while also adding a great view of the city and ocean.

Prince William Sound, Alaska

Located just a couple hours away from Alaska’s biggest city Anchorage, Prince William Sound is a favorite for locals and tourists alike who want to catch glimpses of humpback whales feeding.

The towns of either Valdez or Whittier can access the Sound and in the summer where whales and seals feeding on fish are extremely common. Many animals are scared away by the sound of the drone, but the whales are underwater for most of the time, which makes them a great candidate for filming.

There’s a small airport in Valdez, but other than that you should be able to fly most places. This is just one of many great places to film with a drone in Alaska, as it is known as being one of the most beautiful states in the U.S.

San Francisco, California

Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, San Francisco is known for being a popular place for drone enthusiasts and businesses. We operate out of there and there is definitely a vibrant drone culture in San Fran.

It’s also a great city to shoot, with a wide array of architecture and seaports. You won’t be able to get super close to the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz Island, as they are heavily regulated due to being National Parks. However, there are still plenty great places to capture in the city.

Rigby Island, Australia

Featuring beautiful, clear water and colorful beaches, Rigby Island is starting to become a more popular place for drones to film.

Capture boats, coral, sandy beaches and possibly underwater wildlife in this picturesque setting. It’s no wonder why the image included won 3rd place in SkyPixel’s Australia From Above competition.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, known for its intrinsic art and architecture. It’s a diverse city with old castles, modern architecture, bustling city streets, and beaches which all make it a fantastic place to film with your drone. It’s an incredible city with so many possible filming locations that it is hard to choose. Remember, it is a big city and there are several no-fly zones, so remember to check on AirMap to make sure you are allowed to fly where you want.

Swiss Alps, Switzerland

Known as some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, filming the Swiss Alps with a drone makes you feel as if you’re on top of the world. There are many mountains you could film on, but the video provided is on Mount Titlis, a popular skiing resort where filming with drones is legal.

This has lead to Mount Titlis becoming a popular filming spot, due to its incredible views of the iconic Swiss Alps.

Valle Nevado, Chile

Like the Swiss Alps, this ski resort in Chile offers amazing views due to its high elevation. Its incredible view it gives of the Andes Mountains is spectacular, and it’s hard to find anything like it.

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

Ireland is, in general, an amazing country to film in, and this location is incredibly diverse. Sandy beaches, mountains, lakes, ruins of old castles, waterfalls, coves; it truly has it all.

Another great thing about this location is that it is located far away from any hazards and it is all legal to fly in. If you are looking for a beautiful spot in Ireland, this might be just the place.

Mount Evans, Colorado

Colorado is a beautiful state, but a lot of the best places are National Parks, meaning you can’t fly drones there. But, located about 60 miles outside of Denver, Mount Evans is beautiful country that doesn’t have any no-fly zones nearby.

It’s mountainous, has beautiful terrain, and several near by lakes that are stunning when shot from up above. It is also easy to drive to as a road goes all the way to the base of the mountain. Unfortunately, the road to access the mountain is closed during winters, so you’ll have to do all of your filmings during the summer.

There you have the list of some of the best legal places to film with your drone. 10 aren’t very much, so there are a ton of amazing spots that aren’t on the list. Leave in the comments your favorite place to shoot or your dream place!
