Okay, you may need to pay close attention to this technology mash-up. The Digital Hand, a design research project by Nate Asis, merges craft production, technology, and industrial design. The three physical objects, including a Skeleton Table, A Dot Blanket, and a Point Tray, are all configured under the guidance of a Kinect machine. The overall project used rapid manufacturing technologies and motion tracking digital tools all created by the digital hand of the creator.

Nate Asis states, “ I am passionate about understanding the world through objects.” In his process handbook he began his journey by asking many questions like:

What new connections can happen between people and objects?

What new possibilities arise with production methods?

How are manufacturers responding to customers needs?

Now, try and follow the sequence of events in making his mind-blowing flexible design creation that took about a year and a half to create – The Digital Hand.

First, The Skeleton Table (milled from hard maple wood with steel legs) employs a user’s skeleton data using a Kinect. The edges around the table are replicated after the user’s head, hands and feet, and the table legs are designed after the arms and legs of a user’s skeleton.

Next, the Dot Blanket is determined by the distance from the user to the Kinect. The user is then pixelated and the farther away the user moves, the smaller the pixel. The pattern is the ultimate reason behind the wool blanket design.

Finally, the Point Tray is a 3D printed object based on hand motion. Through following the finger motions, each interaction creates a translucent black circle in a recording. The pattern is then arranged into a 3D printing machine to create the tray. Wrap your brain around that for a bit and if you still don’t understand the full process – review the video a few times. Once you understand it, you see the brilliance.
