Sony is out to prove it can still hang with Apple and Samsung. The global tech brand just announced two new additions to the Xperia family, the C5 Ultra and the M5.
“We are pleased to present two new products that highlight Sony’s advances in camera technology,” said Tony McNulty, Vice-President, Value Category Business Management at Sony Mobile Communications.
“We understand that camera capabilities are important to smartphone users, so we ensured that Sony’s existing camera brilliance was once again surpassed in the new Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 without compromising on other features across design and performance.”
Xperia C5 Ultra
The Xperia C5 Ultra is designed for individuals who love taking selfies. There are two 13-megapixel shooters located at the front and back of the device. Both cameras include flash, a unique feature that makes this model worth considering. The six-inch display boasts full-HD IPS (1920×1080 pixels), which is more than enough for editing and viewing high-resolution photos. No complaints here.
Out of the box, the device runs Android Lollipop, the current standard for Google-powered phones, using a 64-bit 1.7 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. The device measures 164.2 x 79.6 x 8.2 mm and weighs 187g. It’s not the thinnest and lightest in the mid-range smartphone category, but you certainly won’t notice the additional bulk or weight.
Design-wise, the C5 Ultra is very sleek. The logo and branding is tastefully implemented, as with other Xperia models. Buttons located on the side of the mobile phone are thin and smooth. Stock color options include black, white and soft mint.
Compared to the C5 Ultra, the Xperia M5 offers more flexibility without compromising the camera. The screen is noticeably smaller at five inches, but still brings full-HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution. Individuals with active lifestyles might be happy to know that the device is extremely durable, with waterproof and dust tight (IP65 and IP68) protection.
Combined with a 21.5-megapixel shooter (Exmor RS with Hybrid AF F2.2 with ISO up to 3200) and a 13-megapixel selfie cam, this model is a great investment for people in need of a reliable, long-lasting smartphone. Unlike the C5 Ultra, the device does not feature flash for the front camera. Under the hood, the M5 is a beast with a 64-bit 2.0 GHz processor and 3GB of RAM. The hefty 2,600 mAh battery allots for roughly two days of use.
“For beauty and perfection in every direction, Xperia M5 features Sony’s distinctive design with the OmniBalance style in a sleek premium glass finish on both sides. It is also designed for durability with stainless steel corners to protect against bumps,” highlighted Sony in the official press release.
Both units come with 4G connectivity and expandable memory options up to 200GB. To cater to the growing number of power users, the new models will come in single and dual SIM variants.
Availability and Pricing
Sony has not yet released the prices for the Xperia C5 Ultra and M5. Both highly anticipated models will be available in selected countries worldwide by the end of August.
