It’s a complete and total fitness myth that eating right before bed will make you gain a ton of weight. Sure, if you scarf down a cheeseburger or polish off a pint of Ben & Jerry’s right before bed every night, you’re bound to feel and look a little more bloated and probably start packing on a few lbs. However, if a hunger pang strikes right as you’re nestling between your sheets, you don’t have to starve yourself in order to keep your diet or weight on the right path. In fact, a little nosh before bed can help you sleep better and prevent you from waking up in the middle of the night and attacking the contents of your pantry. Below are four healthy bedtime snacks that will help lull you to sleep and won’t run your fit goals off track.

Peanut Butter & Whole Wheat Bread


Spreading some naturally made peanut butter (meaning it’s made from only peanuts, and not additional ingredients like corn syrup) on a toasted piece of whole wheat bread is a healthy and filling bedtime snack that will conquer your nighttime cravings. Best of all, both ingredients are rich in magnesium, a mineral that will relax your muscles. When we’re relaxed, we tend to get a better night’s sleep.

Greek Yogurt & Fruit


Another great snack to help fight a late-night hunger attack is Greek yogurt and fruit. Dole out a half a cup of a plain Greek yogurt of your choice, sprinkle in some cinnamon and add a fruit of your choosing – berries tend to work great as they’re easy to grab and mix in! The lean protein in Greek yogurt will tide your hunger over until the morning.

Dessert Smoothie


If you’ve got a sweet tooth, it can be tough to satisfy your craving while remaining on the healthy end of the spectrum. Respect both your craving and diet with a nutrient-rich dessert smoothie. Combine a cup of almond milk, a couple teaspoons of almond butter, half a banana, a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and lots of ice. Blend it all up and you’ve got a tasty, low-calorie sweet that will fill you up.

Frozen Berries


For those of you who love something cold and sweet, this one is for you. Pour some frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) into a bowl and drizzle some coconut milk over them for a snack that is pretty close to a sorbet, only a lot healthier. This will keep your blood sugar stable during your slumber, which is great for achieving a nice, uninterrupted sleep.
