Just a month and a half after Canon patented the gigantic 1000mm f/5.6 IS DO lens, the camera company is back at it again. In the spotlight this time is a patent on a monstrous EF 40-800mm f/4.5-5.6 lens.

The patent, which was originally spotted by Egami, contains descriptions of four optical formulas for four different 40-800mm internal zoom lenses. Of those, two are for full frame and two are for PowerShot superzooms. As cool as the idea of this mammoth-sized super lens is, it seems relatively unlikely that Canon would try to build it for a full frame camera. Womp, womp. Either way, it’s pretty interesting to see what crazy innovative ideas Canon will come up with next!
