It’s not quite smell-o-vision, but 3DAround, a food photography app from Dacuda, a smart scanning technology company is bringing foodies and techies the next best thing: complete 3D representations of food. And yes, their mission is to get people salivating.

As social media is inundated with photo upon photo of one’s crappy home cooked meals (Instagram by far being the worst offender for soliciting this trend), 3DAround is looking to buck those basic 2D pictures in favor of something that looks, well, real. The app, which recently launched and is currently available in the App Store for iOS, enables a phone’s camera to function as a 3D camera, allowing users to create 3D models of their food in a matter of seconds and, naturally, share it on social media to incite envy, jealous, and most importantly, extreme hunger amongst friends.

“We decided to build a 3D Food Photography App because we all really enjoy food at Dacuda and so many people take food pictures, we thought it would be cool to try and spice up food porn,” said Alex Ilic, founder and CTO of Dacuda, in a recent interview.

3DAround is quite the intuitive and easy to use app. Currently, users can log in either through Facebook or through their email address. Once the app is downloaded and food is in grasp, open the app and ensure the iPhone icon is in the center of the picture and it turns green before taking a shot. When the icon turns green, press record and move the phone steadily from left to right to capture food from all sides and angles, taking care to keep a constant distance between the camera and the food. The phone should remain perfectly still, with one’s body moving around to snap that painstakingly cooked meal from all sides.

The app’s Regular Mode allows users to take a 30° capture of food and is recommended for beginners in order to get a hang of how it all works. Once that’s mastered, Expert Mode enables users to get that full 360° view of their food, capturing every delicious nook and cranny.

3DAround enables users to post and share their 3D food models directly to social media through the app, and can also be embedded on webpages and blogs. With an app and 3DAround web viewer, anyone with a browser, phone or device can witness food in all its three dimensional glory for a truly immersive and quite salacious food porn experience. Ilic notes the web viewer was built specifically to enable a seamless sharing experience on all social media platforms of 3D pictures taken through the app.

“The ultimate goal for 3DAround is to become a platform on which you can share food in a new and never seen before dimension. We want to allow our users to let their audience decide how they view the food, and 3D pictures allow them to do just that. 3DAround is a perfect complement to standard food photography for those special moments,” he said.

With new office space being opened in Palo Alto, Dacuda is placing itself in the heart of Silicon Valley to interact with other leading partners in the 3D and smart scanning space, which will no doubt serve as a boon for 3DAround’s growth and evolution. And being in the Bay Area close to what’s gotta to be the foodie capitol of the world – San Francisco – is a harbinger for lots and lots of tasty looking 3D goodness to come. Just remember, you can look but you can’t eat.
