Roughly 2,000 athletes escaped from Alcatraz this weekend for one of the most popular triathlons in the country. The “Escape from Alcatraz” race started with a mile and a half swim off Alcatraz Island, followed by an 18-mile bike ride and a 7.5-mile run.

The route hit some of San Francisco’s most popular destinations including the Presidio and a 400-step sand ladder on Baker Beach.

After just two hours and two minutes, Eric Lagerstrom sprinted to the finish, followed closely by reigning champ Andy Potts. Ashleigh Gentle led the women’s race, finishing less than 15 minutes behind the men.

The racers represented 40 different countries and ranged in age from 16 to 76. As they crossed the finish line, they were met with cheers from the crowd and congratulations from the announcer who cried out, “You’ve done it! You’ve escaped!”
